On Necromancy

Notes from the diaries of Lord Nathan Mercer.

The magical art of necromancy has long been associated with those of evil
or malicious intent. Though it cannot be denied that many would use such
magic in order to both conquer and to control, there is a more practical use
for such power.

In my research I have concluded that it is indeed possible to perform a pure
resurrection using necromantic magic. This ultimate form of healing has
always been limited to the use of a few priests. Even is such a priest is
available, the magics are so complicated that the healing will often fail.
In addition, no amount of healing can forstall the natural aging and eventual
death of all living creatures. Even worse, the number of priests able to
perform the necessary rites has dwindled over the years. When once it was
possible that any traveling monk and hedge priest could, under the correct
conditions, perform the rituals; Now even many temples fail to have one of
such capabilites at hand.

I have therefore sought to create a new ritual that would not only restore
those recently dead to full life, but would even extend life BEYOND that of
the normal span. Despite using necromantic magic, this extended life
would not be a form of undeath, but rather a true and pure life!

The first phase of experiments has been successful. Using various test
creatures of a non-intelligent nature, I have successfully raised them from
death. The creatures show no signs of the trauma and no change in behavior.
All experiments show healthy, growing and LIVING creatures.

The second phase of experiments will begin soon. For these tests I will
utilize semi-intelligent creatures. The initial experiments have been so
successful that I believe we will move to phase three within the season.
